Best Legal Case Management Software for UK Law Firms

Compare legal case management software for UK law firms. We look at case and document management, billing, client communication, pricing and independent customer reviews.

Quick answer

Clio is our top overall pick for most UK law firms. LEAP is a strong all-in-one option for firms that want case management, legal documents and accounting in one system, while Actionstep suits midsize firms that want more control over how work is organised.

Why this ranking?

Clio has the strongest independent customer feedback of our three main picks, with high ratings across a very large number of reviews.
LEAP also has a strong review base, with a 4.3/5 Capterra rating from more than 500 reviews. Feedback is more mixed on G2 and Trustpilot, so we have taken those reviews into account too.
Actionstep receives generally positive feedback, but there are fewer independent reviews available than for Clio or LEAP.

Clio — Best overall

Viaqo score: 95/100

Clio is our overall pick for UK law firms looking for an easy way to keep cases, clients, documents, tasks and billing in one place.

Clio Manage includes case and client management, document storage, calendars, tasks, time recording, billing, a client portal and online payments. It can also be used on mobile.

Its biggest advantage is the amount of independent customer feedback available. Clio has a 4.7/5 score from more than 1,600 Capterra reviews and 4.6/5 from more than 900 G2 reviews.

Pricing

Clio currently starts at £79 per user per month for its Core plan. Higher plans add more controls, reporting and tools for larger firms.

Good to know

Clio has added more AI features to its software. Some recent reviews on its wider Trustpilot profile have criticised the way some of these features were introduced, so firms that have strict rules around AI should check the current controls before signing up.

Best for: Law firms that want a well-established cloud system with plenty of independent customer feedback.

LEAP — Best all-in-one option

Viaqo score: 90/100

LEAP combines case management, document management, legal accounting, time recording, billing and legal content in one system.

It includes more than 5,000 legal forms and precedents, client and matter management, document creation, a client portal and legal accounting. LEAP also includes AI tools such as LawY.

This makes LEAP particularly interesting for firms that would rather buy one broad system than connect several separate tools.

Pricing

LEAP does not publish its current UK price. The company says it charges per user per month for a set term and asks firms to contact it for pricing. LEAP does not offer a free trial, although firms can request a demonstration.

Customer reviews

LEAP has a 4.3/5 Capterra rating from more than 500 reviews, giving it one of the stronger independent review bases in this comparison. Feedback is less positive on G2 and Trustpilot, although both have far fewer reviews. We take all three sources into account rather than relying on one rating alone.

Its strong Capterra feedback helps LEAP take second place, although the more mixed feedback elsewhere keeps it behind Clio.

Best for: Firms that want case management, documents, accounting and legal tools in one package.

Actionstep — Best for midsize firms

Viaqo score: 87/100

Actionstep is designed mainly for midsize law firms that need more control over how cases and everyday work are organised.

It brings together cases, clients, documents, tasks, calendars, billing and reporting. Firms can also set up repeat steps for different types of legal work rather than managing every case manually.

Independent feedback is generally positive. Actionstep has a 4.2/5 Capterra score from 135 reviews. Reviews often praise its flexibility, although some users say it takes time to set up properly and can require more support than simpler systems.

Pricing

Actionstep does not publish a simple UK starting price. Its official pricing page says it is charged per user, with implementation fees on top.

Good to know

Actionstep makes more sense for a firm that wants to shape the software around the way it works. A very small practice looking for something simple may not need that level of flexibility.

Best for: Midsize firms with more detailed ways of managing cases and staff.

Also considered: Osprey Approach

Osprey Approach is a UK-focused alternative for SME law firms. Its current plans combine case management and legal accounting, but we have not given it a Viaqo score because there is less recent independent customer feedback than for our main picks.

What to look for in legal case management software

Good legal case management software should make it easy to find everything connected to a case without searching through separate systems.

Check how the software handles cases and clients, documents and emails, deadlines and tasks, time and billing, client communication, access permissions and moving your existing data.

Also check the contract before signing. Some suppliers charge extra for setup, moving data or additional tools, while others require longer agreements.

For firms that hold client money, check whether legal accounting is included or whether you will need separate software.

How Viaqo compares legal case management software

We compare case and document management, deadlines, billing, client communication, ease of use, pricing, contract terms and independent customer reviews.

We give more weight to larger, recent independent review samples than to ratings based on only a few customers. Information supplied by software companies helps us check features and prices, but it is not treated as independent customer evidence.

Affiliate commissions never affect Viaqo scores or rankings.
