Best Legal AI Software for UK Law Firms

Compare legal AI software for UK law firms and solicitors. We look at legal research, document review, drafting, source checking, data security, pricing and independent customer reviews.

Quick answer

Clio Work is our top overall pick for small and mid-sized UK law firms. It combines legal research, document analysis and drafting, and can be used with or without Clio Manage.

Lexis+ with Protégé is particularly strong for firms that want AI backed by established UK legal sources, while CoCounsel Legal UK is a strong choice for firms already using Westlaw or Practical Law.

None of the three providers displayed a standard UK list price for the product checked in October 2026. Clio Work uses per-user pricing and offers a free trial.

Why this ranking?

Clio Work takes first place because it offers a good balance for small and mid-sized firms. It covers research, document review and drafting, supports UK jurisdictions and can be bought without Clio’s case management software.

Lexis+ with Protégé is especially strong for UK legal research. It combines AI with LexisNexis sources such as Halsbury’s Laws, All England Law Reports and Practical Guidance.

CoCounsel Legal UK combines AI with Westlaw and Practical Law. It has strong research, drafting and document analysis tools, but its wider product range may be more than some very small firms need.

Independent review data is still limited for specialist legal AI. We therefore give less weight to customer review scores here than on more established software categories.

Clio Work — Best overall

Viaqo score: 92/100

Clio Work is legal AI designed for law firms. It can research legal questions, analyse documents and create first drafts.

Its legal library contains more than one billion documents from over 100 countries. UK coverage includes England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Results link back to their sources and are checked through Clio’s citator.

Firms using Clio Manage can connect their matters directly to Clio Work. You do not need Clio Manage, however. Documents can also be uploaded directly to Clio Work.

Customer reviews

G2 currently lists 23 reviews specifically for Clio Work. Recent reviewers commonly mention legal research, drafting, document analysis and the connection with Clio Manage.

The review sample is still small, however, and many recent reviews were collected through seller or G2 invitations, with some incentivised. We therefore treat the feedback as useful but not yet as strong evidence as the larger review samples available for established legal software.

Pricing

Clio Work uses per-user pricing, but Clio does not currently display a standard UK price on its website.

A free trial is available, or firms can request pricing based on their size and whether they want to use Clio Work on its own or with Clio Manage.

Good to know

Clio says client and matter information is not used to train external AI models. Data is encrypted, and third-party AI providers operate under zero-data-retention agreements.

Best for: Small and mid-sized UK law firms that want one AI tool for research, document analysis and drafting.

Lexis+ with Protégé — Best for UK legal research

Viaqo score: 91/100

Lexis+ with Protégé is the current name for the product previously known as Lexis+ AI.

Its main advantage is its connection with established LexisNexis legal content. This includes Halsbury’s Laws, All England Law Reports and Practical Guidance.

The software can answer legal research questions, draft and summarise documents, analyse uploaded files and work with a firm’s own knowledge. It can also connect with document systems such as iManage, NetDocuments and SharePoint.

Customer reviews

G2 currently shows only two reviews specifically for Lexis+ AI, with an average rating of 4.0/5.

That sample is far too small to draw firm conclusions about customer satisfaction, so we do not give the rating much weight in the Viaqo score.

Pricing

LexisNexis does not publish a standard UK price for Lexis+ with Protégé. Firms need to request a quote.

Good to know

LexisNexis says user interactions are not shared with third parties to improve their products. Its primary and backup cloud locations for the service are in Europe.

The product makes most sense for firms that already value LexisNexis research and Practical Guidance.

Best for: UK firms where legal research and access to established LexisNexis sources are the priority.

CoCounsel Legal UK — Best for Westlaw users

Viaqo score: 90/100

CoCounsel Legal UK is Thomson Reuters’ specialist legal AI platform. The current UK product launched in January 2026.

CoCounsel combines legal research, drafting and document analysis with content from Westlaw and Practical Law. It can research complex questions, summarise and compare documents, create chronologies and help draft legal documents.

The software also works with Microsoft 365 and common document management systems..

Customer reviews

G2 currently shows CoCounsel Legal at 4.7/5 from around 110 reviews.

This needs some caution. Many of the visible reviews date from before Thomson Reuters launched the current CoCounsel Legal UK product and refer to its predecessor, Casetext. We therefore do not treat the overall rating as a direct review score for the current UK platform.

Pricing

Thomson Reuters does not currently show a standard public UK price for CoCounsel Legal UK. Firms are directed to request a demonstration and pricing.

Good to know

CoCounsel Legal UK is particularly attractive if your firm already relies on Westlaw or Practical Law, because those sources are built into the AI research tools.

Best for: Firms that already use, or want AI closely connected with, Westlaw and Practical Law.

Also considered: Legora

Legora covers legal research, drafting and document review. It also offers Microsoft Word tools and workflows for repetitive legal tasks.

It is a major legal AI platform and is used by law firms in the UK. However, pricing is not publicly displayed and its current positioning is still more focused on larger firm-wide deployments than the typical small-business audience Viaqo serves.

Also considered: Harvey

Harvey is one of the best-known specialist legal AI platforms. It covers research, drafting, document review and other legal workflows.

It is widely used by large law firms, including Magic Circle firms, and Harvey says more than 1,400 firms use the platform. That makes it important to include in this comparison, but less natural as our first recommendation for a small UK practice.

What to look for in legal AI software

Legal AI should do more than produce convincing text.

For legal research, check where the answers come from and whether the software links back to the original sources. Lawyers still need to verify cases, citations and other important information.

If you plan to upload client documents, also check how the provider stores and processes your data. Make sure client information is not used to train public AI models without appropriate safeguards.

Finally, compare the jobs you actually want the software to do. A small firm that mainly needs research and first drafts may not need the same system as a larger firm reviewing thousands of documents.

Can UK solicitors use AI for legal work?

Yes, but using AI does not remove a solicitor’s professional responsibilities.

In August 2026, the SRA warned firms in particular about inaccurate AI-generated information and risks to client confidentiality. It says solicitors remain accountable for work produced with AI and should use appropriate human review and professional judgement.

Client information should only be entered into AI systems where suitable contractual, technical and organisational safeguards are in place.

How Viaqo compares legal AI software

We compare UK legal coverage, source checking, research, drafting, document analysis, data security, integrations, pricing and independent customer reviews.

Legal AI is a newer category than case management or accounting software. Independent review samples are still small and are not always directly comparable, so we do not allow a high rating based on a handful of reviews to dominate the score.

Information from software companies helps us check features, security and prices, but it is not treated as independent customer feedback. Affiliate commissions never affect Viaqo scores or rankings.
