Why this ranking?
LEAP takes first place because it combines specialist UK legal accounting with a large independent review base. It has a 4.3/5 Capterra rating from more than 500 reviews.
Clio has even stronger overall customer feedback, with 4.7/5 from more than 1,700 Capterra reviews. Its UK accounting tools are particularly strong for client accounts, billing and connections with accounting software such as Xero and QuickBooks Online.
Osprey Approach offers a broad UK legal accounts system, but there is much less independent customer feedback available. It currently has a 3.9/5 Capterra rating from 30 reviews.
Review scores cover the products as a whole, not only their legal accounting features.
LEAP — Best overall
Viaqo score: 93/100
LEAP is our overall pick for UK law firms that want legal accounting, case management and billing in one system.
It manages client and office accounts, billing, bank reconciliation and financial reporting. LEAP also includes checks and records designed to help firms work in line with the SRA Accounts Rules.
Client money and office money can be tracked separately, while transactions are recorded for audit purposes. LEAP also connects with Xero and QuickBooks Online for wider business accounting such as VAT, payroll and general expenses.
Customer reviews
LEAP has a 4.3/5 Capterra rating from 547 reviews. Recent reviews include positive comments about having accounting, billing and matter management in one system, although some users report issues with support, settings or parts of the desktop software.
Pricing
LEAP charges per user per month, but does not publish the current UK price on its website. A one-off setup fee may also apply for moving data, configuration and training.
Good to know
LEAP makes the most sense for firms that want legal accounts and case management together. If you only need standalone accounting software, you may be paying for tools you do not need.
Best for: UK firms that want legal accounting and case management in one system.
Clio — Best for Clio users
Viaqo score: 92/100
Clio combines billing and client accounting with its wider legal practice management software.
UK firms can keep separate client and office ledgers, record client funds and carry out reconciliations directly in Clio. It also connects with Xero, QuickBooks Online and Klyant when a firm wants additional accounting tools.
Clio is particularly strong for firms that want their cases, time recording, bills, payments and client account information in the same place.
Customer reviews
Clio has a 4.7/5 Capterra rating from 1,748 reviews, giving it by far the largest independent review base in this comparison. Ease of use and customer service are both rated highly.
G2 also currently shows 4.6/5 from close to 1,000 reviews, which supports the generally positive picture.
Pricing
Clio currently starts at £79 per user per month. Client accounting, billing and connections with accounting software are included in its current UK plans.
Good to know
Clio is not simply a standalone accounts package. You are buying a wider law firm management system, so firms that already have case management software should compare the total cost before switching.
Best for: Firms that want Clio for both practice management and client accounting.
Osprey Approach — Best UK all-in-one option
Osprey Approach is a UK-focused system that combines legal accounting, case management and practice management.
Its accounting tools cover client and office accounts, billing, VAT submissions, bank reconciliation, nominal ledgers and financial reports. The software is designed to help UK firms manage their obligations under the SRA Accounts Rules. Osprey Approach
Unlike Clio and LEAP, Osprey can also handle the firm’s wider office accounting inside the same system rather than relying entirely on a separate general accounting package.
Customer reviews
Osprey Approach has a 3.9/5 Capterra rating from 30 reviews. Customer service scores higher at 4.3/5, but the review sample is small and many of the visible reviews are older.
Because there is much less recent independent feedback than for LEAP or Clio, we give Osprey a lower Viaqo score despite its strong UK accounting features.
Pricing
Osprey Advanced costs £110 per paying licence per month. Premium costs £140 per paying licence per month, while Enterprise pricing is available on request. The Advanced plan includes legal accounting, case management and support, while Premium adds the client portal, API access and extra training and support.
Good to know
The three-user minimum makes Osprey less attractive for a sole practitioner or very small firm.
Best for: UK firms that want legal accounts, office accounting and case management in one system.
Also considered: Quill
Quill is another UK-focused option combining legal accounts and practice management. It includes matter management, time recording and accounting tools aimed at UK law firms.
Capterra currently shows 4.0/5 from 24 reviews, but the sample is small and much of the legal-sector feedback is older. Several reviews were also vendor-referred or incentivised, so we would like to see stronger recent independent evidence before giving Quill a Viaqo score.
Also considered: Insight Legal
Insight Legal is designed specifically for UK and Irish law firms and includes legal accounts, billing, client accounts and practice management.
It is relevant for this comparison, but Capterra currently shows no customer reviews, so we have not given it a Viaqo score.
What to look for in legal accounting software
Legal accounting software needs to do more than send invoices and record expenses.
If your firm holds client money, check that the software can keep client and office money separate, maintain client ledgers, reconcile bank accounts and provide a clear audit trail.
Also check billing, VAT and Making Tax Digital, financial reports, user permissions, data migration and whether case management is included.
Finally, look carefully at the contract and setup costs. Some legal software is priced per user and may require a minimum number of licences.
Does legal accounting software make a firm SRA compliant?
No. Software can help a firm follow the SRA Accounts Rules, but the firm remains responsible for compliance.
The SRA requires firms to have appropriate systems and controls for the amount and type of client money they handle.
How Viaqo compares legal accounting software
We compare client and office accounting, bank reconciliation, billing, SRA Accounts Rules tools, reporting, pricing, ease of use and independent customer reviews.
We give more weight to large and recent independent review samples. A high rating based on only a few reviews does not carry the same weight as hundreds of customer reviews.
Information from software companies helps us check features and prices, but it is not treated as independent customer feedback. Affiliate commissions never affect Viaqo scores or rankings.
